SCA hires alum Gelfand as new boys' basketball coach

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Sherwood Christian Eagles are turning to one of their own to head up a boys' basketball team that has seen tremendous turnover in recent years.

Former Eagle Bryan Gelfand is taking over as head boys' basketball coach, SCA announced Wednesday.

"I'm ready to get going," Gelfand tells WALB. "I've always been indebted to Sherwood, and I just want to give back."

Gelfand led the Eagles to the 1996 GISA AAA Final Four his senior year, and was the first SCA player to receive a basketball scholarship, when he signed with Mississippi College.

"We think it will be a perfect fit," says Eagles athletic director Eddie Dixon.

Gelfand says he has high aspirations for his new team.

"I've always been taught to reach for the stars, so I believe we can be the best program, and be an example for people in this community," he says. "Hopefully, we can match the run I made when I was a player and surpass it and bring home the trophy this time."

Gelfand will be the program's fifth head coach in five seasons, but he says that turnover doesn't worry him.

He says he plans on being at Sherwood for a while.

"I have no desire to coach at bigger high schools or in college," Gelfand says. "I just want to work with Sherwood kids."

Now he says he hopes to improve the experience of his seniors, who are on the fourth different head coach.

"I'm sure switching coaches every year hasn't given them much joy in basketball," Gelfand says. "But if I can help them, give them everything I can this year, and if we have success, it would give them a year to remember after all the turnover they've had."

Gelfand began his college career at Division II Mississippi College before transferring to UCF.

He has worked in the past with Five Star basketball camps, as well as with summer camps of college teams and the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers.

Gelfand takes over for Karmarlos Jackson, who was let go after leading SCA to a 14-14 record in his only season with the Eagles.
