COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Congressman Sanford Bishop made a trip to Columbus Wednesday morning to visit the House of Mercy.

He came with a $20,000 check to help fund the non-profit homeless shelter.

Congressman Bishop presented the House of Mercy with the money, which was collected from donations and the Black History Breakfast held in the Columbus Trade Center in February of every year.

"It's a very humbling experience. People in the community have supported the annual black history observance for over two decades and the object of that has always been House of Mercy," said Congressman Bishop. "We should love our neighbor as ourselves…and love should be in action. And of course this gives us an opportunity to show and demonstrate our love and action for our friends and neighbor."

Many people showed up at the House of Mercy to welcome Congressman Bishop and to thank him for his donation.

Congressman Bishop has been involved with the House of Mercy for more than 15 years.

The $20,000 funds will help repair some building damages, as well as buy food and office materials.
