Metro-Columbus' unemployment rate remains 9.2%

The Georgia Department of Labor announced that metro Columbus' unemployment rate was unchanged at 9.2 percent from June to July. The rate was 9.7 percent in July a year ago.

There were 119,700 jobs in July in metro Columbus, down by 800 from 120,500 in June. Most of the job losses came in local government. The area has gained 800 jobs since the 118,900 jobs in July 2012. The annual gains came mostly in professional and business services, leisure and hospitality, financial services, and retail trade. 

The labor force, which is the number of people employed plus those unemployed but actively looking for work, rose by 151 to 131,892 in July, up from 131,741 in June. It was down by 974 from 132,866 in July 2012.

Metro Athens had the lowest area jobless rate at 6.9 percent, while metro Dalton and the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region tied for the highest at 12.3 percent.

Meanwhile, Georgia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for July was 8.8 percent, up from 8.5 percent in June. The rate was 9.1 percent in July a year ago.
