OVERTIME: Massive rebuild for Nighthawks

Posted: Updated:
ORO VALLEY, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Ironwood Ridge must replace pretty much everything but the locker room showers (more of a sports analogy than the kitchen sink).

The Nighthawks begin defense of their Division II State Football Championship on Friday night with just one returning starter from the team that beat Peoria Centennial at Sun Devils Stadium last November.

Linebacker Austin Goodard will be asked to provide leadership to a group that has talent but will be young on both side of the ball.

Peoria Liberty comes to town off a 10-2 season that saw them fall in the 2nd round of the playoffs.

Junior Michael Franzese gets the nod at quarterback for IRHS as he won the competition to start over senior Austin Campbell.

Head coach Matt Johnson admits his team does not have the size up front that they have had in recent seasons that allowed them to run the football with the likes of Jake and Mitch Fischer and Anthony Braunreiter.

So with a stable of talented receivers expect the Nighthawks to throw the football more in 2013.
