OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -

A Phenix City man is out of surgery after being robbed and shot at Trustmart Bank in Opelika, Ala. this morning, August 23.

At 4:51 a.m., Opelika police officers responded to the parking lot of 1801 Thomason Drive after an individual heard a gunshot and notified the police. The officers found the 52-year-old male victim from Phenix City lying on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound to the abdomen.

According to police, the victim whose identity has not been released at this time was making a deposit at the night drop. When he exited his vehicle, he was approached by a man holding a handgun and asking for the money bag. The victim was shot when he attempted to run.

The suspect then grabbed the money bag and fled the area on foot. The amount of money in the bag in undetermined.

The victim was transported to East Alabama Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.  

The case remains under investigation.
