WTVM visited DC for 50th Anniversary of March on Washington

News Leader 9 was present at the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington D.C.

Columbus' Young Minority Leaders chartered a bus, and traveled to the event from Columbus, Ga. These dozens of Columbus residents have joined about 100,000 people in Washington D.C. for today's event. Among them are WTVM's Barbara Gauthier, Photographer DeAllen Burgess and Assistant News Director Janell Lewis.

Some of the Columbus residents attending the event expressed that they hope the anniversary will spark change.

"I think [Dr. King] would be disappointed in us as a race," says Angela Walton. "We haven't done what we needed to do. We can't rely on other people to realize the dream for us. We need to do that for ourselves. That's one reason we took the opportunity to bring as many young people as we did, because they don't realize what others have gone through in order for us to have the privileges that we have."

"I feel like we have a long way to go," says Quinton Addison. "We came a long way, but we still got a long way to go... We still got a lot of division, but everybody gotta do their part to come together."

On the way to Washington, the bus stopped at the grave site of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Atlanta, Ga. for a time of reflection on the significance of the event, the progress we have made as a country working to achieve Dr. King's dream, and the work still left to be done.
