Phenix City man robbed and shot at Opelika bank

A late night run to the bank turned dangerous for one Phenix City man early Friday morning, August 23.

Officers responded the Trustmark Bank off Thomason Drive in Opelika and found a man lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

"The incident was initially reported to the police department by an individual who was in the area and heard the gunshots," explains Captain Bruce DeLong of the Opelika Police Department.

The investigation has revealed the 52-year-old Phenix City man had driven to the bank to make a deposit at the night drop around 5 a.m.

When he got out of his car he was approached by a man holding a gun who demanded he hand over the unknown amount of money.

The victim tried to run, but was shot.

The suspect grabbed the bag and fled the scene on foot.

Police are hoping to catch this man on surveillance video.

"Investigators are looking into that and are working personnel to see if there is anything viable on those films. If there are and detectives want to release that information I will certainly get it back out," says DeLong.

The victim was transported to the East Alabama Medical Center.

He is out of surgery and remains in intensive care.

If you any information you are urged to contact the Opelika police department.
