Gabby Giffords speaks at Columbus conference

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Three years after being shot in the head and having major reconstructive surgery, Congresswoman Gabby Giffords recited the Pledge of Allegiance effortlessly to hundreds in Columbus on August 26.

She and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, addressed the crowd at an annual Blanchard Leadership Conference at Columbus State University.

"The theme of this year's conference is 'Leadership in the New Normal', and the idea is that we all expected things to go back to the way they were and they are not ever going to do that," says John Lester, Assistant Vice President for University Relations at Columbus State University.

Giffords spoke to that same testament Monday night, saying she would never be the same person after that tragic shooting in Tucson that killed six people and injured several others.

Her husband praised his wife for her strength and challenged others to take heed from her experiences.

Leadership director Ed Helton says, "Each year Columbus businessman Jim Blanchard brings leaders to the community with hopes to inspire the next generation."

The Blanchard Leadership Conference is expected to wrap up on August 27.
