PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Bashas' has agreed to pay nearly $1.5 million for mislabeling some of the meat it sold.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said it discovered workers at the gourmet stores AJ's Fine Foods mislabeled products between January 2010 and February 2012.

Employees would label "choice" steak as "prime" which is usually more expensive.

They also mislabeled ground beef as "kobe" - duping customers into paying high prices.

The USDA said the $1.47 million fine will be evenly distributed to the Association of Arizona Food Banks, St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance, United Food Bank, the Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul and Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.

In addition to the fine, Bashas' said it has taken appropriate actions against the employees involved.

Bashas' is a family-owned grocery store chain, primarily located in Arizona, with two locations outside the state, in Needles, California, and Crownpoint, New Mexico.
