For some, Labor Day marks the end of summer, fashion trends, and rest...but do you remember what sparked the national holiday?

Labor Day is a day for working men and women to kick back, relax, and remember the social and economic achievements of American workers.

The first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City according to the United States Department of Labor.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the creators of Labor Day said the holiday should be celebrated with a parade and festival for the recreation and amusement of workers and their families.

For the past four years Ronald and Sherry Muzyka have celebrated at the Old Seale Russell County Court House Labor Day Fair.

Although the celebration of Labor Day has surged, a lot has changed since the 1800s when workplace conditions and bad wages.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics report union membership is on the decline. The Muzyka's say it's because unions have changed.

Ronald Muzyka worked for years as a supervisor at the U-S- Postal Service. He says his experience with unions was both good and bad.
