Judge Hatchett to headline Urban League black tie fundraiser

The Urban League of Greater Columbus has announced that the Honorable Glenda A. Hatchett, a two-time Emmy nominated TV personality, will be the keynote speaker at this year's black tie dinner and gala.

The 17th Annual Equal Opportunity Day Dinner (EOD Black Tie Gala) is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 5, 2013, at the Columbus Georgia Convention and Trade Center Grand Ballroom.

The benefit fundraiser is held each year to assist the Urban League in its quest to provide the Greater Columbus community with training and programs in the areas of employment, foreclosure prevention, housing and economic development, prisoner re-entry, youth education, and adult literacy programs throughout the region.

Hatchett, best known as the host and executive producer of the syndicated show Judge Hatchett (Sony Pictures Television), is also a litigator, motivational speaker, community activist, children's advocate and judge.

"We are delighted that Judge Hatchett has agreed to deliver the keynote address," says Urban League Board Chair Susan Cooper. "She understands the importance of serving others. And, in order for The Urban League of Greater Columbus to serve the needs of the community at large and fulfill our mission, it is imperative that we undertake massive fundraising efforts."

Cooper continues, "This year our financial goal is to raise $750,000. We know we can exceed this goal with the community's generous support. We are asking everyone to participate as proceeds from the EOD Gala will enable the Urban League to elevate our level of community service to greater heights."

The League describes their overall mission as empowering and assisting all minority and low to moderate income individuals, economically challenged, disadvantaged and under-served people in the community at becoming economically self-sufficient, self-reliant and resilient in the area of gaining Equal Access to Equal Opportunities.

"Fulfilling our mission will lead to a better quality of life and a better community for all people. This only happens when we reach back to help those who are in need, pull them up, and out of poverty and into the mainstream of economic prosperity. This EOD Dinner and Gala will help to ensure the Urban League's success in meeting these goals," concludes Cooper.

The event will feature a reception at 6 p.m., the Awards Dinner at 7 p.m., and a Music Gala featuring the D.S.O.S. Band and DJ Michael Soul.
