MACON CO., AL (WSFA) -

What residents on County Road 9 in Macon County near Shorter find so galling about the crime is the brazen approach the suspects took.

The two men burglarized the home at 4 in the morning Tuesday and one of the suspects sexually assaulted the victim. The woman endured a beating and pistol whipping. Her young child was in the home at the time.

"It's the level of aggression everyone is talking about," said Lorna Aho who lives on County Road 9 and knows the victim very well.

Aho says the talk is rampant in the neighborhood to get more involved and become more vigilant in a dramatic way.

"The conversation is no one really feels secure anymore," Aho said.

Not only are neighbors on County Road 9 making plans to strengthen their current community watch program, more than a few, we're told, are buying weapons.

"40 years ago it was wide open," said Bill Segrest.

Segrest remembers a time when homeowners didn't have to lock their doors at night. Those days are long gone.

The word on the street is more and more residents, especially women are buying guns and making plans for target practice. Homeowners are also planning community meetings.

"I know several people are buying weapons," Segrest confirmed.

After the assault the two men in question stole the woman's laptop, a TV, cash and her vehicle, all while her 5-year old son was put in a bedroom by one of the suspects. Authorities found the vehicle a few miles away from the victim's home.

WSFA 12 News learned Thursday that the victim actually struggled with one of the suspects and even knocked him to the ground. The woman suffered scratches, bruises and a black eye. She's now recovering, staying with family outside of Macon County.

As of this writing no one has been arrested but the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and Macon County investigators have what they consider 'good leads' based on solid evidence.
