GIBSON CO., IN (WFIE) -

On Thursday night, Gibson County Auditor Ken Greubel, passed away at St. Mary's Medical Center after a short battle with cancer.

Darrin Greubel says his father, Ken, owned and operated Hallmark stores in Princeton, became a state police dispatcher, and served as Gibson County's Auditor and Safety Director.

"He fought hard," said Darrin. "The cancer overcome him and he went up to be with the lord last night."

Before Ken passed, he left voicemail messages for his wife, Sandy. She was hoping to keep his voice alive after he died but while he was in the hospital, someone stole Sandy's phone.

"It had some keepsakes on there," said Darrin.

Sandy and Darrin sent a text message to whomever stole the phone, explaining the situation and asking for the thief to return it, no questions asked.

"We did not expect to get a text back saying, 'How much do you want (to pay) for your phone back?'"

The thief said the Greubels could have it back if they were willing to pay $200.

The Greubels contacted Evansville Police who were able to recover the voicemails, but not the phone itself.

"Having the voicemails is special to hear that voice when you want to hear it," said Darrin. "To hear that special, 'I love you'.'"

Arrangements are being made for Ken's funeral at Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton.

If you any information on the missing phone, you are encouraged to contact police.
