MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

A 31-year-old man faces numerous charges, including aggravated driving under the influence, after a crash and struggle with Mesa police officers Sunday evening.

Jose Montiel had to be subdued with a stun gun and physical force by officers after he was suspected of driving a convertible sports car through bushes and into a stop sign at 24th Street and Hampton Avenue during a chase with police, said Mesa police Sgt. Tony Landato.

Police said the sports car was seen speeding and going through an apartment complex and failing to heed officers' warnings to pull over, Landato said.

The car ran over a number of plants and bushes before striking the stop sign. Officers said someone threw a beer can out of the car and Montiel was seen getting out of the car to run away.

Officers used a stun gun to no avail and had to physically restrain Montiel.

He was booked into jail on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated DUI, unlawful flight, driving on a revoked license, reckless driving, endangerment, and leaving the scene of an accident.
