September 11th memorial events in the Chattahoochee Valley area

Chattahoochee Valley residents are remembering the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks with several events around the area.

At exactly 8:45 a.m., the time the first plane hit the Twin Towers, Baker Middle School in Columbus, Ga. will be releasing balloons at their flag pole. The event is open to all Baker Middle School parents, students, staff and community. Everyone is asked to wear red, white and blue.

In Auburn, Ala., Philly Connection on South College Street will be honoring police, firefighters and armed forces, with free lunch from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunel Merchant, a survivor from the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, will be present to personally meet and thank service members.

Govenor Robert Bentley will also be in Auburn to join first responders and faith-based volunteer organizations for Ready Alabama Day. Ready Alabama Day promotes citizen disaster preparedness. During the program, Governor Bentley will honor the memory of those who died during the September 11, 2001, attacks and recognize those who united in response to the tragedy. He is scheduled to speak at 1 p.m. at Jordan-Hare Stadium on the campus of Auburn University.  He will be joined by Serve Alabama Director Jon Mason, Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier and various other state and local officials.
