PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A man is in police custody after a 5-month-old baby girl was rushed to the hospital with bruises to her face, head, ears and back, officers said.

Michael Gates, 41, was booked into jail Sunday night on one count of child abuse.

Gates, who is described as a transient, had been temporarily staying with the victim's family at the time of Saturday's alleged incident, according to a court document.

Police said Gates admitted to hitting the baby twice in the face, then dropping the infant on the patio at the Phoenix home, causing her to fall down a few stairs.

The victim suffered another injury when Gates jabbed his finger in the baby's mouth, court paperwork stated.

Gates also admitted to grabbing the baby by her feet, swinging her around and flipping her over by her legs so he could change her diaper, according to court documents.

The alleged incidents took place while the girl's mother was out and the her father was asleep, police said. The mother discovered the injuries when she returned home Saturday.

Gates claimed the baby had suffered an allergic reaction, according to a probable cause statement.
