SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

A Scottsdale barricade situation ended with the surrender of two people in an apartment Wednesday morning.

A Scottsdale police spokesman said two victims escaped their captors earlier Wednesday by leaping from a second-story balcony of the apartment at 1251 N. Miller Rd.

They told police the suspects, armed with a large knife and a handgun, were still in the unit.

One suspect gave up as police arrived and told officers the second suspect was armed and still inside.

A SWAT unit arrived and negotiators were called in and began talking with the remaining suspect.

"If we establish contact, we are pretty successful at that point," Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark said.

The second suspect gave up peacefully about 11:30 a.m.

Police said they learned that two weeks ago the victim, a 23-year-old man, had received a substantial loan from 31-year-old Stephen Cannistra.

When he failed to pay the suspect back, Cannistra and 22-year-old Abel Sobari threatened the victim and his 28-year-old wife, officers said.

While the suspects were in the victim's apartment, they began drinking and smoking marijuana until they passed out, police said. While the suspects were asleep, the victims fled the apartment and escaped to safety.

Police recovered the weapons after the two suspects were arrested. They were booked into jail on charges of kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment and drug charges.

Officers shut down Miller Road between McDowell Road and Roosevelt Street and had secured the area.

A man told CBS 5 News that neighbors were alarmed because the neighborhood is normally quiet.
