COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Officials from Columbus Regional Healthcare System and The Hughston Clinic announced today, September 11, 2013, that both organizations have formed an alliance to develop and operate top-performing orthopedic programs.

Charles A. (Chuck) Stark, president and CEO of Columbus Regional Healthcare said, "This strategic alliance takes the clinical excellence and superior patient satisfaction results achieved by our Hughston Hospital in working with The Hughston Clinic physicians there, and will bring that same level of physician involvement, leadership and commitment to excellence to both Doctors Hospital and The Medical Center. We are honored to be partnering with the physicians of The Hughston Clinic to provide access to their services at our three hospitals."

Mark Baker, CEO of the Hughston Clinic P.C., says this is an exciting time. "We are expanding, and I couldn't be more enthusiastic about what we have in the works. We have an outstanding team of well-known physicians, and I have total confidence in partnering with Columbus Regional Healthcare System. We are all looking forward to embracing our new partnership to better serve our community."

As part of the strategic alliance, The Hughston Clinic will be recruiting orthopedic trauma surgeons to complement the work of Dr. John J. McGuigan Jr. and the other dedicated orthopedic surgeons that provide orthopedic trauma coverage at The Medical Center. The expected full complement of three full-time orthopedic trauma surgeons will provide 24/7 coverage for The Medical Center's Emergency and Trauma Center. The Hughston Clinic will be opening an office near The Medical Center for its trauma surgeons.

The Hughston Clinic and its subsidiary, The Hughston Medical Management Group, will lead new program development and existing program enhancements at all three Columbus Regional Healthcare System hospitals. These developments will be aimed at building upon the system's current orthopedic program offerings.

This new strategic alliance will bring improved access throughout the region for patients needing urgent, emergent orthopedic care and trauma surgery through transport to The Medical Center. At the same time, it will give patients additional access points through Columbus Regional's three hospital locations to receive services from the nationally recognized physicians of The Hughston Clinic.
