PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Firefighters were able to contain a house fire in Phoenix to the attic, and the home's family can thank one of its nine dogs that alerted them to the fire.

A Phoenix Fire Department spokesman said the roof fire was reported about 7:41 a.m. Thursday by a passer-by. At the same time, Buck, the family's 10-month-old dog, began barking, waking the family of seven and allowing them to get out of the house unharmed.

The fire department was helping the family find temporary shelter.

Two of the dogs were initially reported missing outside the home, but both were eventually found, the spokesman said.

The cause of the fire had not been determined, but the flames were isolated to the attic area, the spokesman said.
