PINE MOUNTAIN, GA (WTVM) - The 20th Annual Immunize Georgia Conference was held Thursday.
Public and private health care practitioners met at Callaway Gardens to promote immunization services and to network with other health professionals across the state of Georgia.
The Immunize Georgia Group says Columbus and its surrounding counties have the second lowest rate of immunization.
Doctors who spoke at the conference say vaccination is the most effective way to prevent various diseases.
"Georgia has been a pioneer in immunization delivery, in fact, one of the most important aspects of a childhood immunization initiative years ago," said Dr. Walter Oernstein from Emory University.
"I hope it means that immunization is being recognized as public health, that basically is our most documentable strategies for improving the health of Georgians for minimizing disease- infectious diseases- and some vaccines even minimizing the chances of getting cancer," said Dr. Patrick O'Neal with the Georgia Department of Public Health.
This is the first time the conference took place at Callaway Gardens. About 400 nurses, doctors and physicians all across the state of Georgia attended the event.
