Maricopa County sheriff's deputies have seized nine neglected dogs from an elderly man advertising them for sale on a Phoenix website.

The breeder, John Brown, is being questioned and will be charged with animal neglect, according to Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Arpaio said his office got a tip from a person who responded to a "puppies for sale" classified ad on Thursday and saw the dogs were in poor condition.

The sheriff's office, acting on the tip, sent an undercover detective to the 85-year-old man's home near County Road 85 and Southern Avenue on Friday morning, said Maricopa County sheriff's Lt. Brandon Jones.

The detective posed as a person wanting to purchase an advertised labradoodle, a cross between a Labrador retriever and a poodle.

The sheriff's office said the dogs that were advertised were so infected with hundreds of ticks that they have very little coat remaining.

Detectives served a search warrant on the property in the southwest Valley Friday, according to Arpaio.

The labradoodles were taken to the Palm Glen Vet Center for medical treatment and will be transferred to the sheriff's MASH unit in First Avenue Jail where they'll be cared for by female inmates until they are ready for adoption.
