Your old shoes can make someone else's day.

Keep Columbus Beautiful launched a Shoe Recycling campaign this morning, September 13, to reuse and send old shoes to developing countries.

Each year, more than 350,000,000 pairs of shoes are thrown away, and it takes about a thousand years for most shoes to decompose.

Shoes collected today were from commissioners only, and they are excited to see how many more shoes they will collect once local schools and other organizations start donating.

Cleo Griswould of Keep Columbus Beautiful said, "We are hoping to collect twelve thousand bags of shoes with 25 pairs of shoes per bag. So that's our goal is twelve thousand bags, and those are 30 gallon bags of shoes. Columbus is a very caring community, and I think our community is going to embrace the idea because it's a way of giving back."

Schools in the area will begin collecting shoes on Monday, September 16. The last day of the campaign in on November 15.
