Posted: Updated:

Technology that changes the way of life for people all over the nation is one of goals for the new Mike Hubbard Center for Advanced Science, Innovation and Commerce building located at Auburn University.

This state-of-the-art facility will house advanced scientific research in areas such as bioenergy, water quality, and food safety.

"In order for America to be competitive in the 21st century, we're going to have to develop, train and education a very innovative group of students to go off and create the next generation of companies for Alabama and the United States," says AU College of Agriculture Dean, William Batchelor.

Construction on the $28.8 million dollar center began in 2011.

AU's Board of Trustees voted to name the 84,000-square-foot building after Alabama Speaker of the House, Mike Hubbard, who helped secure $14.1 million in state matching funds to accompany a multi-million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology.

"It means a lot that Auburn appreciates what I do for them and I assure you I appreciate what Auburn has done for me and my family, but this is going to be a great facility. Lots of great work and helping a lot of people will happen in this facility," explains Alabama Speaker of the House, Mike Hubbard.

Officials believe work done at this facility will benefit the state's economy, such as the renewable energy focus leading to new jobs.

Food Safety research will also position Alabama as a hub for the nation's food safety testing, technology development and training.

"This building is all about collaboration. It's all about working together to come up with really earth shattering  discoveries that can change the quality of life for people not only here in this area and the state of Alabama, but the United States of America," says Hubbard.
