COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Darren Gray, 23, appeared in court after being charged with the Sept. 14 murder of 21-year-old Harry Short Jr.

Columbus Police (CPD) are investigating a shooting death that took place at Club Ciroc at 3433 North Lumpkin Road in Columbus, Ga.

At 1:28 a.m. on Sept. 14, 21-Short was shot by the security guard at the club.

Police arrived on the scene to find Short lying in the parking lot, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. He was taken to Columbus Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead at around 2 a.m.

An investigation has revealed that Gray shot Short several times. The two had become involved in a physical confrontation when Short was asked to leave the club.

Detectives testified in court that Gray said he tased Short because he was causing a distrurbance. He says Short was removed from the club and Short returned with a gun.

Gray admits to shooting Short. However, his account of the incident was not consistent, according to CPD.

Statements from witnesses are conflicting as to Short's possession of a handgun, and his actions prior to being shot.

In court, Gray spoke on his own behalf and said he acted in self defense. Detectives in court say no other witnesses could say they saw Short with a gun.

He has been charged with Murder. Gray is being held on no bond for the murder of Short. He is also held on $15,000 bond for Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, and $1,000 each for not having the proper permit and not meeting requirements to obtain a permit as an armed secutiry guard.
