DCS officers will get new bulletproof vests

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Dougherty County School Board approved spending $18,000 to buy bulletproof vests for school police officers.

That was one of the recommendations of the department review led by the Clayton County Police chief who says school officers need to be protected.

"Well I think each officer on the street in today's society should wear a vest, I think that it should not be an option, I think it should be something that's mandatory to protect that officers safety," said Clarence Cox III, Chief of Police, Clayton County School System.

School leaders aren't sure yet how many vests they'll be able to buy with that $18,000.
