PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

The Phenix City side of the Chattahoochee River will be taking on a new look soon as progress is expected to begin this month for the new Troy University riverfront academic building.

Troy University has awarded the construction contract to Bear Brothers Construction of Montgomery. The new facility will be a 44,000-square foot, four-story building. Bear Brothers will soon begin moving equipment to the site for the projected 14 to 16 months construction process.

Architects for the project are McKee & Associates of Montgomery. The project will be the third building designed by the firm on the University's Phenix City Campus.

"This is the culmination of a 10-year partnership between the city of Phenix City and Troy University," said Dr. David White, Vice Chancellor of TROY's Phenix City Campus. "The University was able to accomplish this project thanks to the generosity of the city of Phenix City, as well as business and private donations."

The new building, which represents phase one of a two-phase riverfront building project, will house programs of the Sorrell College of Business and the College of Health and Human Services. In addition, the building will house the Center for Water Resource Economics and the Center for Risk Management Insurance, representing the first of several centers of excellence that are planned, according to Dr. White.

Phase two of the project, which will double the size of the new building to 88,000-square feet and allow for the relocation of the entire Phenix City Campus to the riverfront site, is expected to take place in the next five to eight years, Dr. White said.

"The vision of a TROY campus on the river in Phenix City was part of a University-city of Phenix City partnership that all felt would lead to economic development of the Phenix City riverfront," Dr. White said. "Evidence of that economic development can already be seen in the development of a Courtyard by Marriott, in the property next to ours, and W.C. Bradley Co.'s purchase of the old Phenix City Plaza just across the 14th Street Bridge. Troy University is pleased and excited to take a leading role in development on the river."
