COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The driver involved in the July 30th car accident that lead to the death of Cpl. Keith Slay and the hospitalization of his partner Dep. Brad Evans is facing misdemeanor charges, confirms Mayor Theresa Tomlinson.

The driver of the car that allegedly caused Slay to swerve off the road and collide into a utility pole is Alex Komendantov, 74, is expected to turn himself into the police soon.

On July 30th, Slay and his partner were on their way to a meth drug bust near Flat Rock Rd. when they crashed on Veterans Pkwy. According to the police report, Slay and his partner were speeding in the turning lane when Komendantov tried to merge into their lane. Slay swerved out of the way to avoid the car, and crashed into the pole.

This is a developing story and more information will be added as it becomes available.
