Food Network star Sunny Anderson visits old stomping ground, Fort Benning

FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

Food Network personality Sunny Anderson was at the main Post Exchange on Fort Benning today, September 18, 2013, signing copies of her debut cookbook entitled Sunny's Kitchen: Easy Food for Real Life.

The self-taught chef says the cookbook is a reflection of who she is and the places she has lived, including Fort Benning.

"This entire book is a sum of who I am as a person," says Anderson. "I first began as an army brat. I was born on Fort Sil in Lawton, Oklahoma. From there we moved to so many military bases that I actually listed them in the back, because when I meet people they're like, ‘Where've you've lived?' I say like, ‘Everywhere.' I've got food from our time in Germany. I've got food from our time in Georgia. I remember distinctly my mom making pot stickers when we moved here, and so I've got some dumplings that are pretty much the same thing."

Anderson says her family was stationed at Fort Benning twice while she was growing up, and she has fond memories of shucking oysters on the back porch.

Anderson is also a veteran of the US Air Force, and was honorably discharged in 1997.
