Multiple break-ins at parking garage in downtown Toledo

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Many residents at the Commodore Perry Apartments in downtown Toledo have had their cars broken into, and they say they're fed up.

The parking garage there is used by the residents, as well as people downtown for events. James Dabe is one of those guests.

Dabe drove up from Columbus to spend the weekend with a friend. He thought his car would be safe in the Commodore Perry parking garage.

"We went to the Browns game in Minnesota this weekend, got back this morning around 6 or 7, slept a couple hours and I was going to drive back home," Dabe explained. "I came out and my car was broken into."

Dabe found his passenger window shattered, glass everywhere, and he says a pair of $120 sunglasses was missing.

"I had my checkbook in there, they didn't even touch it," he said. "They were just, I guess, looking for things they could get quick value for."

Dabe says he's visited his friend in Toledo several times before, but this break-in was a first for him.

"It makes me nervous to park in the garage, even though there are surveillance cameras," he said.

Dabe requested to see the surveillance video, but was told management had to look at it first. He filed a police report, and according to Toledo Police, 17 similar reports have been filed since June.

"Maybe they should have a guard on staff," Dabe suggested. "I went to OSU and the parking lots always had a guard on staff."

He says he will be driving back to Columbus to get his window fixed.

Toledo News Now attempted to contact the Commodore Perry Apartments manager about the break-ins and was told they will not be releasing a statement at this time.
