SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A body of a young man was found floating in the Savannah River on Tuesday morning.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police say they have an idea who this person might be; however it's still too early in the investigation to confirm the body's identity.

They have been looking for a young man in his teens or early 20s since Sunday morning. The body was found close to where witnesses say the young man fell in on Sunday morning.

"They're in the process now of doing the investigation - forensics. The detectives are in looking for whatever clues they can to try and determine exactly what happened. It's going to be tough but we have to go through all of the procedures," said Julian Miller, public information administrator for the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Dept.

Someone spotted the body in the water at about 9:45 a.m. near the Shrimp Factory on River Street.

"We've all been just upset wanting the person to be found and pulled out of the river," said Joy Ange, who works at the open air market on River Street. "You know, it's just been really sad for all of us just thinking about him suffering like he did."

Police and assisting agencies have been searching for the person for nearly two days using divers and sonar gear.

"It was ironically right where we were looking for it on Sunday- the problem was the current has gotten so strong that the divers literally couldn't get under the water," Miller said.

The person is described as a young man in his late teens or early 20s. Police say they do not suspect any criminal activity, but still have a full investigation underway to find out what happened.
