PEORIA, AZ (CBS5) -

You'd be hard pressed to catch Nanette Cornelius without her fishing rod. The heavy equipment operator enjoys wetting her line whenever she gets a chance.

Sunday a week ago, she loaded up her dog and headed out to Lake Pleasant to see what was biting.

Cornelius was casting off the end of the pier when she discovered Peaty didn't know how to swim.

"The fish were really biting and jumping. He was looking down and slipped in. I tried pulling him up by his chain but I couldn't do it. I couldn't get him over that last hump. He stopped paddling and went under, so I jumped in," said Cornelius.

Cornelius positioned herself under the 96-pound pooch to hold his head above water.

"I tried to lift him up onto the dock, and I couldn't do it. Then I couldn't hold on to the dock because it was all slippery," Cornelius said.

That's when she said she knew she was in trouble and started yelling for help.

"Underneath the water, I seen the flashlights coming from the side," Cornelius said.

Two men camping nearby pulled Peaty out of the water and then hoisted Cornelius onto the dock.

"They were half asleep, and then they just went back to their campsite," Cornelius said.

Cornelius told CBS 5 News she has a message for the men she calls her guardian angels.

"Bless their hearts. I owe them everything in the world. If it wasn't for them, we would have went under," Cornelius said.
