GCU Learning Lounge helps local high school students

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

It's partnership is between GCU and Alhambra High School, and it's already getting a good grade from students, instructors and administrators.

The Learning Lounge pairs up to 50 GCU students with Alhambra High School students, focusing primarily on reading, math and science.

"My tutor is helping me understand geometry because it's just one-on-one, and she pays attention to me," said AHS sophomore Marlen Maldonado.

"In school, there's a lot of students and a teacher cannot just focus on one student at a time, because they have to focus on all these other students and be able to help them out.  And over there, they're just focused on you," said AHS sophomore Vanessa Valdivia.

The program is called the Learning Lounge because of its relaxed and inviting setting.  It's a part of GCU's K through 12 'Outreach Program' in which the university continues to help its neighbors thrive and prosper.

"The partnership with Grand Canyon University has helped us enormously. We are now a 'C' school, and we're not happy with a 'C', but we're looking to an 'A'," AHS principal Claudio Coria said.

GCU students actually go through a full job application process in order to become hired as student mentors. And whether their major is education, business or mathematics, the program is equally rewarding for them.

"I'm able to mentor these kids that come from the community that I come from. I grew up here, so I can relate to them," said GCU mentor Deesember Corrales.

"I like seeing that light bulb. When I'm working with the students, I've actually jumped up and was like, 'oh you got it'," said GCU mentor Ashley Reynolds.

"We're very grateful for the generosity and thoughtfulness of Grand Canyon University.  They've invested significantly in us, and I see this partnership for a long time," added Coria.
