ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Tonight, Darton College students, faculty and staff gathered near the water fountain on their campus to remember one of their own, Ben Richards a Darton wrestler who collapsed while working out with his teammates earlier this month.

"This candle is definitely in remembrance of his spirit, very pronounced spirit on this campus," said Talia Ashley, Ben Richards professor.

"I have lost loved ones that is 16, 14, and I know how it feels for the parents and for those friends to lose someone that's close to them," said Jeremy Brown, Darton student.

Local ministers offered words of encouragement to campus community and shared Ben's love for God.

"And so God I'm thankful tonight that in the brief moments I got to share with Ben that his life spoke so voluminously of you," said local minister.

One of Ben Richards professors said Ben was a student who was filled with so much life.

"He seemed shy at first in the spring, but one of my favorite things about Ben is his smile, and as he continued to stay here at Darton, he smiles more, he touched students, and for me he was different," said Ashley.

Talia Ashley also says Ben's presence motivated other students to want to succeed.

"When he was in my class which he exited early by the way, a very intelligent young man, his presence in class caused the other students to want to present themselves with a different posture," said Ashley.

Ben's father was at tonight's vigil and shared his memories of his son as well.

"He loved college, he loved the roommates he had, he loved the team, and other people, he was a great guy, but there was a motivation came from deep within and that was the Lord Jesus Christ," said Chuck Richards, Ben Richards father.

And that motivation, is a motivation Ben Richards left with the entire campus community, hoping others would follow in his footsteps.
