Child found safe after walking away from Perrysburg daycare center

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A child somehow left a Perrysburg daycare center Friday morning, but was returned to his family safely after a stranger called police.

Victor Anderson saw the 3-year-old boy on Louisiana Avenue just after 10:30 a.m. He had wandered away from the YMCA Adventure Center on East South Boundary Street.

"I had police on the phone, and once I got to where I couldn't follow him in my vehicle anymore, I got out and I followed him through the neighborhood," Anderson said.

Anderson stayed with the boy until police arrived at the corner of Cedar Court and Southwood Drive. Police believe he was missing for about 23 minutes.

Police took the boy to the police station and an officer contacted the YMCA Adventure Center. Two caregivers went to the station and confirmed the boy had been missing. They told police the boy has autism and was in a room with several children during ‘free play' before they realized he was gone.

The boy's aunt and father came to get him.

"I wouldn't be real happy, if I was his parents, with the center he was at," Anderson said. "But at any rate, I was just concerned about his well-being and I didn't want to have anything go wrong."

Police say the boy was uninjured and didn't appear to be in distress when he was found. A copy of the police report is being forwarded to Wood County Children Services.

The YMCA/JCC of Toledo released the following statement on the matter:

There was an incident today that involved a child in our center who ran away from the center.  Within minutes staff identified he was missing and initiated emergency protocol.  The child was found by Perrysburg Police a short time later, safe and unharmed and taken to the Perrysburg Police station until his parents arrived.   We are extremely grateful that the child is safe and in the care of his parents.

The safety of the children in our programs is our number one priority.  We do everything we can to ensure the safety of the children and are investigating this incident to determine if any additional safety measures can be implemented.
