Ed Martin withdraws from GOP Primary for Congress

A Republican is leaving the race for the congressional seat representing southern Arizona now held by Democrat Ron Barber.

Republican Congressional candidate Ed Martin announced Friday that he's suspending his campaign for Congress in District 2.

"As a result of unforeseen personal family challenges that have required and will continue to require my undivided attention, I find it necessary to withdraw from the Republican primary for Congress in CD-02," Martin said in a statement Friday.

Martin announced his candidacy for the 2nd Congressional District seat in the fall, joining Martha McSally in the race for the GOP nomination in the 2014 primary election.

Martin is a fill-in talk-radio host and president of a nonprofit horse racing integrity group.

Barber beat McSally in the November 2012 race. He first won the seat held by his former boss Gabrielle Giffords in a special election after she resigned in January 2012 because of injuries she received in a mass shooting at a political event in Tucson.
