Turning trash into charity: The 15th Annual Olivia Andrews Tab Run

Posted: Updated:

Saturday, September 28, was a beautiful day for the 15th Annual Olivia Andrews Tab Run in support of the Ronald McDonald House of Columbus.

About 800 motorcycles carrying over 1,200 riders traveled from Griffin, Ga. to Columbus. The biker procession was five miles long, making them difficult to miss as they paraded on Manchester Expressway, down I-185 S to Victory Drive, and finally arriving at the National Infantry Museum for an afternoon of celebration.

This organization of motorcyclists known as the South side Riders does not actually donate money, but something that benefits the charity, and the environment.

"They bring in, literally, tons and tons of pop tabs," says Beth Mancini, Program Director for Ronald McDonald House Charities of West Georgia. "They save them all through the year, all the different subgroups from their biker organization, and they bring in a huge trailer."

Mancini explains that the charity recycles all of these pop tabs each year, and this earns thousands of dollars specifically for the Ronald McDonald House of Columbus.

Steve Rabideaux and his wife have been participating in the event since 2002, and he says the ride is good for the charity itself, and those who participate. "You've got the camaraderie of all your fellow bikers, but then everybody's getting together for a good cause," he says.

Olivia Andrews was a premature infant who stayed at the Ronald McDonald House in Columbus when she was born. Her uncle was grateful to the charity for what they were able to do for their family, but did not have the amount of money he felt inspired to donate. He came-up with tab run idea that has been a tradition ever since.
