AUTAUGA CO., AL (WSFA) -

Linda Barnes could hardly contain her emotions when talking about her oldest son Edward Barnes. "We all loved him," Barnes said through tears.

In January of 2012, hunters found human bones near a set of railroad tracks in the Vida community of Autauga County. The remains were sent to a special lab in north Texas where a  positive DNA match was made. Edward Cortera Barnes would have been 25-years old today.

Sheriff Herbie Johnson says even though it took awhile they never gave up.

"Our officers worked very hard on this one," said Johnson.

Although detectives won't talk about the case in detail, Mrs. Barnes says her son was shot 4 times. Barnes says she was told by investigators her son was most likely shot at another location and the killer dumped his body in Autauga County.

"He had no connection to Autauga County," said Barnes.

The sheriff's department believes Edward Barnes' remains had been in the woods for at least a year before they were found by the hunters.

"That's based on the clothing and the layer of leaves and the amount of leaves that had fallen," Autauga County's Chief Deputy Joe Sedinger said. "We don't have any suspects but we are working good leads."

Chief Sedinger is asking the public to call the Secret Witness Line at 334-361-2599.

With an identity in hand, the search is now on for the killer and a motive, a search while a heartbroken mother waits for answers.
