COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Breast cancer can be a devastating challenge to come against, but there was not a somber person in the ballroom for the 11th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center earlier today, October 1, 2013.

This year's event saw a record crowd of nearly 1,300 people, and raised $35,000 in support of breast cancer treatment in Columbus.

Anne Holmes, Senior Media and Public Relations Manager for Columbus Regional Health, says part of the money from today's event will go towards purchasing a 3D Mammography machine for the Columbus Regional Breast Care Center.

"It's a particularly important piece of machinery for women who have dense breast tissue, as it helps you more quickly and accurately detect breast cancer," say Holmes.

Patty Livingston and Olga "Yogi" Hall shared inspirational stories of survival, and Featured Speaker Jeanne Robertson lifted the crowd's spirits with a hilarious talk called Humor: a Strategy for Success.

Actors from the Springer Opera House kicked-off the fundraiser by performing a scene from their recent production of Steel Magnolias, which they specifically tailored to reflect breast cancer survivors in honor of today's event.

The theme this year was "life is better with friends."

For more information about the 3D Mammography machine that will soon be a resource at the Columbus Regional Breast Care Center, visit hologic3D.com.
