BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Birmingham Police Department says they have arrested a man in connection to a vehicle theft.

On Tuesday, officers began an investigation into a report of a stolen vehicle from the Walgreens parking lot in the 2100 block of Montgomery Highway.

Birmingham Police Officer Johnny Brooks was off duty when he observed a man driving a vehicle that matched the stolen vehicle's description in the Gardendale area around midnight. A check of the tag confirmed the stolen vehicle and Officer Brooks followed it to the 800 block of Odum Road, where he took the suspect into custody without incident. The car was recovered undamaged with the victim's belongings inside.

Officers were informed the victim had left his keys in the vehicle before entering the store. The suspect had just been released from the Homewood City Jail when he found the vehicle.

22-year-old Desmond Brown has been charged with theft of a vehicle. He is being held in the Jefferson County Jail.
