COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Columbus police on the hunt for suspected burglars make three arrests on Irwin way near St. Mary's road.

Witnesses say they saw three men running through the neighborhood with police officers close on their heels.  One woman watched as two were apprehended in her backyard.

"I saw them drag two away from back there, and put them in the car, and then come around with another one.  I guess they got their job done," said Cassandra Carey.

A woman on Ida Drive called 911 just before 1 p.m. to say three suspicious men were in her yard, possibly planning to break into her house.  Police quickly responded and when they came across three men nearby, they say the group took off running in different directions.  Letha Beard lives nearby and said she knows the suspects. She tells News Leader Nine she tried to be like a mother to them.

"When I saw those police running up and down the street, the first thing that came to me was - I hope it's not them.  And when I saw it was them, all I could do was cry," said Beard.

She felt emotional at today's arrest scene when she was reminded of when her own son has been in trouble in the past.

"When I looked in their faces, I could see him sitting on the side of that police car, and it just made tears come out of my eyes.  I was crying for them and their parents, because I know they're hurting.  I just wanted them to do right and realize, this isn't anything but trouble.  If they keep going this route, somebody's going to get hurt.  Make a change, turn your life around, it's never too late," said Beard.

Aubrey Swaningan, Davairrean Baker, and Devontae Morris are currently in the County jail, charged with loitering, prowling, and obstruction.

None of these three men have been charged with burglary, because police said they are still trying to piece together all of the information.  The three are scheduled for hearings in Muscogee County Recorder's Court Thursday morning.
