71-year-old charged with attempted murder in Troy stabbing

TROY, AL (WSFA) -

The Troy Police Department says its officers have arrested a 71-year-old man and charged him with attempted murder in connection with a stabbing Friday afternoon. The suspect is identified as Billy Gene Cowart.

According to Troy Police Chief Jimmy Ennis, the stabbing happened around 3:25 p.m in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Trojan Way.

The victim was transported to an area hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses told investigators the description of the suspect's vehicle which was quickly spotted by responding officers traveling south on US 29 leaving town.

Troy Police Department Detectives and Officers conducted a felony traffic stop on Cowart's vehicle in area of US 29 and County Road 1165 and took the man into custody.

A felony warrant was obtained on Cowart for the charge of attempted murder. He was processed and transported to the Pike County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

A motive in this case has not been released and the case remains under investigation.
