Bring your animals to church day?

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Today, October 4, is the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi in the Roman Catholic Church.

As part of a long-held tradition, dozens of Columbus families brought their pets—everything from dogs to frogs—to St. Anne Catholic Church for the Blessing of the Animals.

Father Jacob Almeter, Parochial Vicar of St. Anne Catholic Church, explains that blessing the animals actually blesses the families they belong to. "Animals bless families in the sense they bring joy to families, to people--and companionship."

According to the Church, blessing animals on this day is a memorial to Saint Francis of Assisi's love for all creatures.
