Facebook friend scam alert

How well do you really know your Facebook friends? Some are finding out they didn't know them at all when it leads them right into a scam.

It starts with a simple friend request but once you click the accept button, things take a turn. You get a message about winning an online lottery just for Facebook users.

It comes from the new friend or they point you to a link to find out what you've won and sometimes it even says you've been selected by Facebook creator, Mark Zukerberg himself.

It's says you've won $950,000, but first you have to send money to an address to release your winnings, winnings no one has gotten.

Crooks are using other people's profile pictures. In one case, a photo was tracked back to a top ranking official with Homeland Security.

Maybe it was supposed to be a joke but the Better Business Bureau doesn't find it funny and they say either should you.

"Depending on your security settings, now that they're a friend most likely they are going to be able to access information about you but maybe even your other friends as well. people post things about being on vacation, so they may know when you're gone or if you have anything in there about your birth date, now you've given them pieces of your puzzle," said Michele Mason with the BBB.

Every time Facebook is notified about the scam, they pull the profile but another one could pop up in it's place. So be careful of what you click on.
