CULLMAN, AL (WAFF) -

A meeting in Cullman on Tuesday about the local Head Start program could bring encouraging news.

A Texas couple have made a donation to keep these programs open across the country, including ones in the Valley.

Philanthropists Laura and John Arnold, from Houston, Texas donated the money after they realized the government shutdown affected more than 7,000 children in the Head Start program.

Last week, the Florence City school board voted to close the Handy Head Start program because of the shutdown. Cullman City schools planned to furlough all head start employees starting Wednesday. The school board said the federal government funds all the Head Start employees' salaries.

The National Head Start Association said the donation may actually turn into a loan. If the government finally approves funding, the association will repay the money.
