14th Street Bridge reopens as the Frank K. Martin Bridge

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The 14th Street Pedestrian Bridge has officially reopened today, October 9. A dedication ceremony took place this morning.

The bridge, linking Columbus and Phenix City over the Chattahoochee River, has been renamed after former Columbus Mayor Frank K. Martin.

According to Mayor Teresa Tomlinson, Martin was a leader who took a chance on the old river by making it beautiful for the city.

"He was the first to see the potential of this renewed river. Instead of demolishing it, we chose to renew it and rebuild it for the enjoyment of future generations. We re-purpose it and reform it for the new era," says Tomlinson.

Martin served one term as mayor after his election in 1990. During those years, he passed the sales tax for improvement that still affects Columbus today.

Martin passed away last year.
