BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

BIRMINGHAM AL (WBRC) -If you hit just about any kind of store in the month of October, chances are you'll see many pink products.

That's because October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the pink ribbon is the widely used symbol to represent the cause.

You can find it on everything from hair products to athletic gear and even nutritional supplements.

Many people may think that any pink product will benefit breast cancer research but the Better Business Bureau says not quite.

The popular pink ribbon is not regulated by any agency and that means companies are free to put on products- even if none of the proceeds from the purchase goes to a breast cancer charity.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is one of the country's largest foundations that for breast cancer research and education. "Susan G. Komen for the Cure will always have our logo on it," explained Mandy Heards, a spokeswoman for the Birmingham chapter.

You can tell it apart from the rest because it's the pink ribbon with a dot at the top.

"It has the percent of funds that's being donated. So, it specifically says the donation structure and that's what you want to look for. "

However, not all pink products will have obvious labels. A little digging may go a long way. At the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month website, the organization provides information for collaborating organizations and official NBCAM merchandise: http://www.nbcam.org/.
