BBB warns against "Pink Washing" scams during Breast Cancer Awareness month

While good causes bring out the generosity in most people, they can also bring out dishonesty in others.

The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the Better Business Bureau warns consumers to watch out for a type of scam called "pink washing".

Pink washing involves convincing people to buy their pink products, giving the impression that part of the money is going to support breast cancer research.

Michele Mason with the Better Business Bureau says, "We want people to keep in mind that there's no one that regulates the use of the pink ribbon, so just seeing the pink ribbon alone does not mean the organization or company displaying it will donate and support those organizations."

Mason suggests researching the company before making the purchase. Find out what percentage of the sale will be donated, and to which charity. Then, research the charity itself.
