New reality show about pastor's draws criticism and applause from Christian church

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Oxygen's new reality show "Preachers of LA" is drawing criticism for the opulent lifestyles of the religious leaders the show follows.

According to usachurches.com, with nearly 300 churches right here in the Fountain City when the show premiered, many were glued to their TV's.

"Everybody's talking about the LA preachers, Hollywood production there and I think it's controversial because of who is involved in it," said Saint James Missionary Baptist Church senior pastor Ralph Huling.

The show claims to give a rare glimpse into the private world of those who've dedicated their lives to teaching the Word of God.

Once access was granted...the criticism followed. Saint James Missionary Baptist Church senior pastor Ralph Huling says he can see why the lavish lifestyles of the show's pastors can be criticized if misunderstood.

"We have this tendency to expect ministers to be someone or something different from other people of the community," Huling commented.

Huling believed driving expensive cars, and living in massive homes didn't exclude someone from being called to preach.

However, he said he's more concerned about those wanting to step into the pulpit for the wrong reasons.

"We have copycats. There are going to be a lot of people wanting to emulate what they see on television and they can miss out on the mission. The mission is about serving God and serving people," Huling explained.

Huling said although he can appreciate the show he won't get caught up in the lights and cameras but in the word of God.
