COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

October is Down Syndrome Awareness month, and the Chattahoochee Valley Down Syndrome Association (CVDSA) held their 4th Annual Buddy Walk at Columbus State University today, October 12.

Families and supporters of the organization came as teams to raise money and awareness, like 2-year-old Sawyer Carow's family who called themselves Team Superman.

Sawyer's mom, Gina Carow, says they chose that name because their son has a lot in common with Superman. "Sawyer is adopted," she says. "Superman was also adopted, and he had his issue with kryptonite. [Sawyer] has his issue with his extra chromosomes. But Superman saved the world, so we're like, ‘Sawyer's going to do great things.'"

The success of events like the annual Buddy Walk means the CVDSA can be available as a free resource to families like the Carows year round.

The association creates a continual community of support for the Chattahoochee Valley families they serve. Melissa Clark with the CVDSA says that is what the cause is all about. "Our best resource is our families, because we share information and experiences," she says.

Clark estimated 450 people in attendance for this year's event. Last year they raised about $8,000. This year, their goal was to exceed $10,000.

The CVDSA is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization. Their services begin with a New Parent Package for families as soon as a newborn is diagnosed with Down Syndrome. The CVDSA acts as a liaison with the hospitals to make contact with these families. They also host several social events, and provide a lending library full of resources including books and DVDs.

Recently, they have been able to offer sponsorships to families to be able to attend the National Down Syndrome Convention.
