WTVM 10/12/13 Editorial: Give 9

(WTVM) - At the beginning of the year, WTVM started its "Give 9" campaign with the goal of honoring local charities in the community.

The premise is simple. You go to our website, nominate your favorite non-profit organization, and the one with the most votes wins $5,000.

With the help of our sponsor, Headquarter Nissan, so far we've awarded $15,000 to three 1st place winners, including Animal Ark Rescue of Columbus, the Golden Rule of Butler, and most recently, the East Alabama Humane Society in Phenix City.

We've also given out $1,500 to 2nd place winners, courtesy of Jarrod Pest Control.

The money is important, especially in this tough economy where charities are often the first to feel the pinch. But more than that, we hope to create awareness about the non-profits in our community. We want to show you the work they're doing, and the ways you can help.

As part of "Give 9", employees from WTVM and our sponsors perform a day of service for each winning charity. We helped with pet adoptions with first quarter winner Animal Ark Rescue. We held a carwash and yard sale in Butler to benefit 2nd quarter winner, the Golden Rule. And in the coming weeks we'll help care for the animals at the East Alabama Humane Society.

We thank our sponsors for their support, and you for your votes. Keep them coming! Soon we will be announcing our fourth quarter winners.

We hope "Give 9" will remind us all about the importance of giving, whether it be money, time, or an on-line vote. It all adds up.
